The global fast-food chain has removed a holiday commercial created via AI following receiving widespread criticism on social media.

The brief film was developed via generative AI clips and was originally published publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Reaction and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the advert. Several labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This incident is an important learning as we investigate the proper use of AI," stated a representative from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of situations that can go wrong during the festive season, using the slogan "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that incorporate generative AI have emerged as a growing trend among prominent companies, especially for the holiday campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has similarly launched back-to-back AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos produced using current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked worries about automation in the creative sector, with some observers pointing out it might affect work for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

She stated, the development took "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then crafted afterward "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the sentiment for some AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also encountered scrutiny for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The episode highlights the evolving conversation within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between new tools and human craftsmanship.
